Where We Work
Shyntorbulia is a remote Khasi tribal village nestled between the Umsiang and Umsha rivers in Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya — reachable only by a 2 km walk from the nearest road. Rich in natural resources and community spirit, the village has remained economically isolated due to poor connectivity, seasonal flooding, and limited access to markets and technical support.
The Challenge
Apart from one small grocery shop and a tea stall, Shyntorbulia has no village-based enterprises or organised markets. Most of the 63 households depend on seasonal agriculture, daily wage labour, and the sale of bamboo or forest produce. Large areas of cultivable land remain underused for want of quality planting material, technical knowledge, financial literacy and reliable market linkages.
Our Intervention
In December 2025, RWF partnered with the Dorbar Shnong Shyntorbulia to organise the inaugural Shyntor Festival, bringing the village into the spotlight and strengthening ties with government and development partners. Building on that momentum, RWF is now launching the Shyntorbulia Community Resilience Initiative — anchored by a community-owned multi-species nursery as the village's first organised livelihood asset.
- Establishing nursery infrastructure: beds, shade house, fencing, water supply and storage.
- Producing quality saplings for fruit trees, agroforestry, spices and vegetables.
- Hands-on training in nursery management, plant propagation and climate-resilient farming.
- Financial literacy, savings and enterprise-readiness sessions for households.
- Strengthening the Dorbar Shnong, Self-Help Groups and youth volunteers as local institutions.
- Government convergence and the annual Shyntor Festival as a growing development platform.
Our Vision
To strengthen the resilience of Shyntorbulia through community-led livelihoods, climate-resilient agriculture, financial capability and institutional strength — while building a practical, evidence-based model of rural development that RWF can replicate in other underserved villages across Meghalaya and Northeast India.
Expected Outcomes
- A functional community nursery producing quality planting material and laying the foundation for diversified household livelihoods.
- Stronger community capacity — technical skills, financial literacy and greater participation of women, youth, the Dorbar Shnong and SHGs.
- A stronger RWF, with improved systems for programme management, monitoring, documentation and partnerships — and a replicable model for community-led rural development.
Investing in the First Step
The total Year-1 project cost is ₹5.01 lakh. RWF is co-investing ₹1.41 lakh in programme activities, coordination and institutional support, while seeking ₹3.6 lakh in catalytic funding for nursery establishment, technical capacity building, and key personnel — the first step in a long-term partnership with Shyntorbulia.
